It’s no surprise that the best way to keep your floors sparkling clean is with a mop.
Earlier, we spoke about what type of mop to buy, and what their uses are. However, not matter which one you get, you still need to maintain it properly.
So, how do you keep your mop clean? Here is everything you need to know about how to clean a mop properly.
Avoid Mildew
Before we get into how to clean a mop, it’s important that you know once mildew has started to grow, it’s time to get rid of that mop.
Your mop will not do its job if it’s covered in mildew. When you clean with a mop covered in mildew, you are simply spreading odor and bacteria around your home.
Here’s how you can keep your mop clean and mildew free.
Rinse After Use
It’s vital that you thoroughly rinse your mop after every time you use it. Once you are done mopping, you’ll want to rinse any dirt or cleaning solution from your mop in your sink until your mop is totally clean.
If you have any traces of dirt on your mop, it will spread grime. Also, if you leave leftover soap on your mop, it can damage it.
Wash Your Mop
If you have a machine-washable mop, then dump your mop’s head into the washing machine after use. Make sure you follow any cleaning instructions, usually a gentle cycle at the highest temperature is recommended.
If your mop can’t go in the washing machine, then you’ll want to make a mixture of half water and half bleach in a clean bucket high enough to cover the mop head. You’ll want to soak the mop head in this mixture for fifteen minutes. Next, you’ll want to rinse the mixture off the mop until the water runs clear.
Let Your Mop Dry Completely
In order to prevent bacteria from growing on your mop, you’ll want to make sure your mop head is dry before you store it away. In order to do this, wring the mop out as much as possible. Then put the mop outside on a clothesline with natural light, as the sunshine will kill the bacteria.
If you don’t have access to a clothesline, have the mop stand upright in a bathtub or well-ventilated area. You’ll want to avoid mildew or any bacteria growth.
Properly Store Your Mop
You’ll want to make sure after use and cleaning that you store your mop in a dry cool place. Try to hang your mop head in a way that it’s not touching the floor. If you’ve been able to properly dry your mop, then it should be ready for the next use.
Replace the Mop Head When Needed
To prevent your mop from becoming a cleaning hazard, you’ll want to replace your mop head when needed. A good rule of thumb is to replace your mop head every two to three months, or even sooner if it’s looking dirty.
Remember, your floors are only as clean as your mop head. So, if your mop is dirty, your floors won’t be getting clean.
