Ensure you set your washer to run on hot water on a medium load setting. Allow the machine to run so that the baking soda and vinegar can mix. Then, let the water sit for about 30 minutes. The mixture naturally breaks up any mold and mineral deposits to leave a clean washing machine.
Step 2: Scrub the Washer
After the cycle is finished, use a toothbrush and sponge soaked in vinegar to scrub inside the washing machine.
Make sure you clean the soap dispenser and the inside of the door. For front-loading washers, you should also clean the rubber seal. If your machine has a removable detergent dispenser, soak it in the vinegar mixture, then scrub it.
Don’t forget to give the exteriors a thorough wipe-down. Use a toothbrush to get into the tub’s rim and other areas the sponge can’t reach. For a top loader, clean the agitator as well.
Step 3: Run Another Cycle
Run a second regular cycle with just hot water. You can choose to add a little vinegar to clear up any residue left from the washing process. After the cycle, leave your washer’s door open to allow the inside part to dry and to avoid mildew growth.
You should repeat this process every six months to prevent any mineral build-up and bacterial growth.
