How to Clean Baseboards

How to Clean Baseboards

Luckily, cleaning the baseboards is not difficult, but it will take some time. If you consider that there are baseboards in every room, and some are located behind heavy furniture, you can see why this job seems overwhelming.

So, grab the whole family and get them involved. It will make the job go much faster.

Deep Clean

If you can’t remember the last time you’ve cleaned your baseboards, it’s probably time for a good deep cleaning.

Here’s what you’ll need to gather before you start:

  • Microfiber cloth
  • Bucket with soapy water
  • Damp cloth
  • Cotton swabs
  • Dry towels

Start by dry dusting the baseboards with the microfiber cloth. This will get up all the loose dust before you start.

Then take the cloth and dip it in the soapy water, wring it out so it is just damp and not soaked, and wipe down the baseboards. Don’t forget to change out the soapy water when it gets murky.

In your water solutions, you can use a few drops of dish soap, or make your own castile or borax-based cleaner.

Use the cotton swabs to get into the corners, then use the dry towels to wipe up any puddles left behind. You’ll want to make sure the baseboards are completely dry before you put any furniture back.

Scheduled Maintenance

Once you’ve finished a good thorough cleaning, it’s easier to do scheduled maintenance to keep your baseboards looking spic and span.

There are a couple easy ways to do this:

Magic Erasers.

Use Magic Erasers and a bucket of soapy water and simply wipe them down. Just make sure you wring the sponge out well so it’s not too wet.

Wipes

This might not the most eco-friendly way to clean baseboards, but it is the fastest and takes the least amount of preparation. Just take some wipes and wipe the boards down.

This method is so easy that even your kids can do it, so put them to work!

Quick Light Dusting

If you clean your baseboards regularly, you may just need a quick light dusting every once in a while.

This can be done using a vacuum attachment. When you are vacuuming a room, take a few minutes to do the baseboards at the same time.

Don’t want to crawl around on the floor? Grab a yardstick and a sock. Slip the sock on the yardstick and there is no need to bend over while dusting the baseboards. For best results, use a microfiber sock.

Small brooms, clean paintbrushes, and fabric softener sheets also work well for dry dusting.
